The relationship with patients:

It is neither practicable nor necessary to seek a patient’s specific consent each time information needs to be passed on for a particular purpose.  Our patients expect the NHS to respond effectively to their needs; we can do so only if we have the necessary information.  An essential feature of the relationship between patients and the Practice is the need for patients to be fully informed of the uses to which information about them may be put.

When information may be passed on:

Information may be passed on to someone else:

  1. With the patient’s written consent, or

  2. On a need to know basis if the following circumstances apply:

bullet

The recipient needs the information because he or she is or may be concerned with the patient’s care and treatment (e.g. another doctor).

bullet

The information is required by a statute or court order.

bullet

Passing the information can be justified for other reasons, usually for the protection of the public (e.g. Safeguarding Children, violent crime, etc).
